the last debate he had was against sarah palin. i think debating paul ryan and sarah palin are two completely different animals. and we haven't seen him do a lot of debating. so, you know, let's hope that he doesn't show up as rusty. if not, it will really build on republican momentum. and i think it will change the tone of this race. two debates where the republicans can really change it. >> a lot of the president's supporters didn't think he spent enough time preparing for this debate. romney spent a lot more time preparing than the president did. how much time between now and next thursday should the vice president spend? get rid of his campaigning and start practicing, practicing, practicing a debate against paul ryan? >> look, first of all, mitt romney's been in dress rehearsal for opening night on broadway for five years. there's no way you can take that much time off. but that aside he had a great debate performance and i don't want to downplay that. it was a good debate performance. but i think the president should have put

i would remind you, he didn't do that well against sarah palin, so -- but also, paul ryan is a real policy wonk. he knows all the details. so if i were advising paul ryan, and i am not, they just haven't asked for it, i would say be careful that you don't come across as somebody who gets down into the weeds about omb numbers and cbo and sequestration. a lot of these things that the average americans are really not familiar with. he wants to be clear. joe is a very -- excuse me, the vice president is a very attractive guy and if i were him, i would be playing on that as well. >> senator, two things, if i may. one is the ongoing situation regarding the death of ambassador christopher stevens in libya. lots of vagueness about what really went on in the days leading up to this and indeed, afterwards. what is your assessment of where we are now? >> well, let me tell you what's not vague, and that is five days after, five days after what was very quickly determined by the intelligence committee as a terrorist attack, they trotted out our ambassador to the u.n. to every major news outlet saying t

you know, our biggest online data that i remember was when sarah palin accepted the nomination for vp. in some ways we were getting for hillary clinton even when it's the women go. i think the clinton coalition really didn't come in. it wasn't criminally clinton, but the clinton coalition came in on the day palin announced a thing from the money. it's people can rally around your candidate and everything begins with a belief in your candidate. so i can't say what it's like for other candidates. but we had some days where there were some pretty tough days and people rallied and it didn't go the other way. and frankly they were just sunday's coming in now, this kind this kind of slowed down and people got nervous. but i don't think in our case we have a lot of those big swings. they do say -- there is a scene that candidates never get out of the race. you see candidates to stay on after they've had a bad moment and just keep going when they're going to get out. there is a kind of saying that a candidate doesn't get out until the donors say, which is when the money stops. into your other

you were the stand-in for sarah palin when joe biden was prepping in 2008. we were all wondering what's going on behind the scenes. how important is it this prepping for debate now? >> oh, it's huge. i mean, can you look at books and study policy papers all you want. there is no substitute for standing behind a podium and having everything but the kitchen sink thrown at you and formulate phrases to communicate. there's no substitute, and no one loves to do it. no one wants to do it, although i must say joe biden was very game in 2008 to do it. >> tell us what it looks like. who is actually in the room? this is a pretty secretive process zoosh yeah, i mean, i don't know what they're doing this year, but i can tell you in 2008 they have the policy people there. you remember that biden and obama were just sort of marrying as a team, and so we had some obama people and some biden people in the room. the folks who know the issues extremely well. the room itself is set up -- the stage exactly like the debate will be, so when you do the mock debates, you're really
